CHAPTER 17

We left as soon as the sun set.

Over a dozen black armored vans were lined up in front of the house. I shared a vehicle with my former companions, and I watched everyone vacate the fort efficiently.

“Are we abandoning the fort?” I asked as our fleet cruised out of the gate.

“The shifter army is coming here,” Snow White said. He sat with Fairy in the last row of the seats. “This compound is compromised.”

“The shifter army is coming?” I shrieked. “They’re still chasing us? When will they learn to give the fuck up and just go home?”

“The dogs are hunters,” Fairy said, polishing her nails. “They never give up their quarry.”

“Who’s the quarry?” I demanded. “They’d better not think it’s me.”

“It’s you.” Fairy smiled at me. “But that’s okay. We’re with you. They lost face when we stole you right from under their noses. They need to even the score.”

I narrowed my eyes in displeasure. “So this is a my-dick-can’t-be-smaller-than-yours thing?”

“Our dicks are definitely bigger,” Snow White said confidently.

Marlowe cleared his throat, and Snow White immediately apologized. Marlowe didn’t like anyone to talk about dicks in front of me. He was old-fashioned like that.

“It’s about more than losing face,” Marlowe said, but he wouldn’t elaborate further.

I guessed it had something to do with Jared. Shade had once told me that his brother would never let me go, especially after he’d found out that I’d upgraded his power through the mating bond and would give him more juice if our bond deepened.

But I’d broken the bond. Then it dawned on me that he was losing the extra power that came from mating with me once, so he was hellbent on capturing me and then forcing me to reforge the bond.

Cold rage beat in me like hail.

Marlowe turned to me. He must have sensed my abrupt mood shift. He could feel me more acutely than anyone else. I looked away, not wanting him to see the shame and rage bleeding out of my eyes, for I’d given my virginity to an unworthy male and then suffered sheer humiliation in his hands.

Marlowe grasped my hand, opened my trembling fist, and kissed my palm. A shiver washed over me, pleasant electricity buzzing over my skin. My raw need for him rose right away. Following that, I heard the mating call.

My nipples became taut, and my pussy clenched with aching need. But now wasn’t the time, especially when we had an audience.

I turned my head to glance at our companions, and they all stared at Marlowe’s lips on my palm, as if they couldn’t believe that the Vampire King had a tender side. I contained a smile and snuggled closer to him to reciprocate his affection.

The Alpha Heir had never showered me with any public affection.

He’d sent his cousin to tell me to dress properly and not to embarrass him when he decided to take me out on a date. He’d darted me a disdainful look when I couldn’t shift during the first few minutes of the Moon Ceremony.
